North Dakota Counties - Towns & People is a story of the counties, towns, and people of the Flickertail State. Unfortunately, time and space do not allow a more in-depth presentation. Instead, my approach has been to cover the lives of a select few of the early settlers, and the counties and towns they helped settle. Originally published in three parts, Part I in 2007, Part II in 2008, and Part III in 2009, North Dakota Counties – Towns & People won the 20th and 22nd annual G. K. Haukebo Heritage Resource Award in the Historical Emphasis Category.
My love affair with history, especially the history of North Dakota, had its beginnings during the early 1950s. I was, at that time, a student attending St. Leo’s, a parochial school in Minot, North Dakota. The subject being discussed was life among the Mandan Indians, as told through the words of early explorers. From that day forward, I have always had a special place in my heart for the history of North Dakota.
In the process of writing this story, I have used a variety of sources, including newspapers, letters, diaries, government records, W.P.A. records, and the memories of descendants. Together, these records allow us to roll back the hands of time to the early days of North Dakota.
Generally speaking, the names of Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, Jamestown, and Minot are familiar names to many Americans. But what of the other cities, little towns, and communities scattered here and there across the fifty-three counties that make up the face of North Dakota.
Counties like Adams, Dickey, Logan, Oliver, Pembina, and Sioux; Towns like Cannon Ball, Center, Ellendale, Mountain, Napoleon, and Reeder; People like Pierce Blewett, Rose O’Boyle, Gottfried Hass, Thor Hauge, Capt. William Larrabee, Eva McCoy, Abraham Youngquist, to name but a few.
There are even those towns like Mineral Springs, Wamduska, and Wheelock that remain only in our memories—memories of a time now past; a time when the land first beckoned the homesteaders and town builders to come. Come and build a new life for you and your family here in the land of the flickertail.
North Dakota Counties Towns People The Complete Edition eBook Joseph Gavett
Length: Print, 916 pages.Amazon Kindle Sales Rank: 696,712.
As a reference book, this is not the sort of book you are likely to read from page one through page 916. Through the miracle of kindle, though, you won't even break a sweat lugging it around wherever you go, if you do choose to read it continually.
I like the layout, according to the counties, alphabetically. I also love it's details, but, I do wish it at least mentioned all of the locales and founding dates.
I live in Eddy County. The author did a nice early history of Eddy County, but mentioned only New Rockford, Sheyenne, and Tiffany. Nothing at all about Brantford, Pleasant Prairie or any other township.
I admit, carried to its logical extreme, if every single townships was mentioned this might be a tome exceeding 2,000 pages, so I do understand how difficult that might be.
Still, since it is not truly complete, but is otherwise outstanding writing and editing, I am rating this as a five star reference book.
I do hope, though, that the writer will revise and enlarge this great reference.
